What to Do During An Earthquake (Outdoors)

Earthquakes are scary, unpredictable and very destructive. Since you cannot predict when and where one will strike, it is important to be prepared and knowledgeable about what to do when you find yourself caught in one. Our last two blog posts focused on what to do to prepare yourself and your house before and earthquake, along with what to do when caught in an earthquake while indoors.

But what if you are outdoors when an earthquake strikes?

1)   Stay where you are.

2)   Move away from any buildings, streetlights and utility wires.

3)   Stay put in the open until the shaking stops. Most fatalities and injuries of persons who are outdoors during an earthquake happen when they are directly outside a building, at an exit, or along walls. Most fatalities, when outdoors during an earthquake, are caused by collapsing walls, flying glass and falling objects.

If in a vehicle:

1)  Stop as quickly and safely as possible and STAY in the vehicle.

2)   Avoid stopping near or next to buildings, trees, overpasses and utility wires.

3)   Once the earthquake has stopped, proceed cautiously and avoid roads, bridges or ramps that may have been damages.

If Trapped Under Debris:

1)   Try not to move and kick up dust.

2)   Do not light a match.

3)   Cover your mouth with a piece of clothing or handkerchief.

4)   Tap on a pipe or some loud object to make noise and let rescuers know where you are. Emergency signaling tools, like a glowstick with a whistle or flashing key chains, are easy things to carry with you to alert rescuers of your location. Try to avoid shouting if possible, so you do not inhale dust.
