Prepare Your Family for Home Fires
There were more than 1.4 million fires reported in the US in 2012, causing more than 3,000 deaths. Over 92% of these deaths were in home fires. The vast majority of these casualties were in homes without working smoke alarms.
While Life+Gear does not produce smoke alarms, we saw there might be an opportunity to help people be better prepared for fires in their homes. More than 7% of home fires start in bedrooms, for example, and these cause more than a quarter of all home fire deaths.
So what could we do to help? The answer is Life+Gear's "Fire Safety" line of home lighting and night lights. These night lights brighten immediately on detection of an active smoke alarm, providing the additional light you and your family may need to help get out of your house -- faster than ever before.
Why does TIME matter in home fires?
When we learned how fast fires are, and how little time you time you might have to escape, we wanted to come up with a solution that would help you get out faster once you hear a smoke alarm. By providing additional light if smoke alarms go off, the Life+Gear Fire Safety lights can help guide your way to safety faster than ever before.
As FEMA goes on to say, "There is little time! In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be engulfed in flames. Most deadly fires occur in the home when people are asleep. If you wake up to a fire, you won't have time to grab valuables because fire spreads too quickly and the smoke is too thick. There is only time to escape."
Why does LIGHT matter in home fires?
Instead of providing light, fires produce darkness in the form of dark smoke. This, combined with the fact that many home fires occur at night — and are most lethal when people are sleeping — made it clear that an important way to help prepare your family for fires is to give them the light they need to see…and to escape.
How does our Fire Safety Lighting WORK?
Dennis Bertken, President and Co-Founder of Life+Gear, realized that the simplest solution was also the best. You should always have working smoke alarms in your home, so what was needed was something that worked with existing smoke alarm systems.
Life+Gear Fire Safety lights do just that; they are activated by the sound of a nearby smoke alarm.
How does this work? Since 1995 in the US and more recently in many European countries, all home smoke alarms have to produce an alert source at a frequency of around 3100 Hz and above 85db, so it is high-pitched and very loud. Life+Gear's Fire Safety lights brighten to 50 lumens or more when they detect this combination of frequency and volume.
This means that you can be alerted to a fire by your working smoke alarms, and then escape with the additional light from your Fire Safety light.
What do the EXPERTS have to say?
Fire Safety is one of the most important things to think about when considering overall home safety and emergency preparation. Life+Gear's Fire Safety lights are an important part of the solution, as more and more experts are saying:
